Nestled over a small riverine valley below a seasonal cascade in the hills east of Napa, the Suspension House is a crisp, modernist icon in balance with the roar of the waterfall in winter and the hum of insects in summer. The existing basis for the extensive remodel and addition was a two-story wood-framed house supported by posts resting directly in the creek, which is no longer legal in California. Our proposed solution was to literally lift the house above the ravine by creating a hybrid bridge-building structure around it in place. An exoskeletal, bi-directional moment frame wraps around the core of the building to support the existing floors and third story addition; trusses are created between the main and lower levels that tie the structure back to six nodes that are anchored into the rock faces on either bank. In this way, the structure could become an expressed part of the architectural vision, support the open space and addition within, and rehabilitate the creek through the removal of the old wood and concrete supports.
